Living in Chevy Chase, Washington DC: Neighborhood Guide

The antiquated small-town facade of the main street belies the hustle and bustle of neighboring Washington DC and Bethesda, Maryland. The picturesque manicured lawns and shaded sidewalks are pure Americana, straight from a Norman Rockwell painting. 

The population density of the Chevy Chase neighborhood belies the surrounding area. At just a little over 20,000 residents, most with advanced degrees, the average age of residents is between 35-45 years old with a median household income of over $175,000 per year. 

The Community

Chevy Chase is a small suburb outside of Washington DC, and with that location to the nation’s power center comes a lifestyle of laid back attitudes just outside the hustle and bustle of the city. You can see the mixture of suburban life with rural qualities with the local deer and other creatures occasionally roaming the streets, backyards, or just inside Rock Creek Park. 

Safety/Crime

Due in part to its affluence and proximity to the power center of the United States, the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington DC is one of the safest areas in all of the Capitol and surrounding communities. 

There are two main police stations in Chevy Chase, the Chevy Chase Village Police Department and the Friendship Heights Field Office with the Washington DC Police Department and Montgomery County Police Foundation just beyond the city limits. 

There is a combination of DC Fire and EMS stations and Bethesda Fire Department to handle emergency rescue and fire suppression needs within the neighborhood of Chevy Chase, Washington DC.

The Schools

For educational opportunities in the area, the District of Columbia Public Schools operates the public schools, including top-ranked Lafayette Elementary, Alice Deal Junior High, and Woodrow Wilson High School. 

Blessed Sacrament Catholic School offers parochial, private education for elementary school-aged residents, whether they belong to the Catholic Church or not. High School aged students looking for a denominational education may attend St. John’s College High School, a private co-educational institution. 


For higher education, options include American University, Georgetown University, and Howard University headline schools in the immediate area around Chevy Chase. 

The Culture

The frenetic pace of Washington, DC, is contrary to the casual setting of Chevy Chase. With plenty of green spaces and museums, locals are immersed in their community, and a friendly ethos is common. In an affluent neighborhood, residents of Chevy Chase are used to some of the finer things. Access to power and influence, and ambition are characteristics of the population in Chevy Chase. 

The Lifestyle

Laid-back living, sleepy streets, the Mainstreet of yesteryear, and small-town Americana define the neighborhood. However, there are plenty of green areas, museums, shops, and more for locals, and access to the Metro provides the idyllic lull of a small town with quick access to a big city. 

Proximity to the main street in Chevy Chase makes it a walkable community for residents to shop, eat, and entertain themselves without having to leave the city limits.

Whether you have a full day or an hour, you can check out the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, or National Zoo, as it’s commonly referred to as a great time. You can sit and relax watching the Panda’s while off in the distance, hear Lion’s roar, or catch the monkeys swinging around overhead on the rope bridges. For the curious, check out our nearest relatives in the animal kingdom, the apes, and see Orangutans, Gorillas, and other primates.

One of the largest green spaces in Chevy Chase, Washington DC, is Rock Creek Park, located on the eastern side. There are ample trails and bike paths to hike, run, and bike through for people of all fitness levels and abilities. Spend the day exploring or pack a light lunch and picnic with a special someone. Bathrooms are available but are spread out over the massive area that is Rock Creek Park. 

The first-rate cuisine with a local flare is the mission of Macon Bistro & Larder, located on Connecticut Avenue. The staff works diligently to make every guest feel regular and unique, while the kitchen puts out amazing award-winning quality food. Located inside the historic arcade building with soaring windows gives every diner a great view of passersby on Connecticut Avenue. Outdoor seating is an option, especially during the warmer months. Be sure to get the braised short ribs and mac n cheese. 

On the eastern outskirts of town lies a hidden little gem is known as Mr. Braxton Bar & Kitchen. From excellent starters like the Honey Jerk Wings to Truffle Mac to mouth-watering Lamb Chops and Lemon Jerk Chicken, plan to come hungry, stay for a while, and have a great time. Unique craft cocktails such as the Cherie Spritz (tequila instead of vodka) help round out the night. 

If you’re looking for an exotic hole-in-the-wall Tiki Bar next to a hidden Chinese diner, then The Tiki Room is the place for you. Known for the $6 Mai Tai, expect to have outstanding cocktails at a discount price, especially for the community of Chevy Chase. Locals come to have a good relaxing time in the throwback decor to a Tiki Bar thousands of miles away. 

The upscale, vibrant atmosphere of The Collection is the luxury shopping center in town. 

Curated shops and events highlight the community, showcase local and national talent, and excellent eateries. The Collection is the mall to spend hours shopping and people watching. 

Real Estate

Eclectic early 20th-century architecture is what gives the Chevy Chase neighborhood its charm. Predominantly detached, single-family homes are for sale in the area, though there are sporadic condominiums available. 

Condominiums are available along the center area of shops and more affordable for professionals and families just starting. The median condominium price is a reasonable $350,000 for 2-bedrooms, while detached single-family homes may run $1.3-1.8 million for an average of 3-bedrooms and 3,000 square feet.
